PTSD Attack Him: How the Process Works — Phoenix Heart

By Poe

The nights were always the hardest. The silence that others found
peaceful only amplified the noise in his mind. He would doze off into
a deep sleep, but it was never restful. Instead, it was punctuated by
nightmares and disorienting sounds that jarred him awake. This night
was no different.
A loud, unfamiliar noise broke through his slumber. Heart
pounding, he crept past the curtain and saw a spaceship waiting
outside. It was an impossibility, but in his dream state, it seemed all
too real. Confused, he grabbed his coat and rushed out the door. When
he arrived at the spacecraft, a voice echoed in the background:
“Come, my dear son, let’s review your timeline.” The words were
chilling, freezing him in place. His heart sank as he murmured, “Who
said that?” There was no reply.
He jolted awake, the morning sun casting rays across his bed. For
a moment, he lay there, puzzled and confused. “I swear I was there,”
he whispered to himself. “But whose voice was that?”
Determined to shake off the remnants of the dream, he forced
himself through his morning routine. The familiar faces, the repeated
moments, and the inevitable tragic flashbacks haunted him. Every
clink of the coffee mug, every rustle of the newspaper, every face on
the street was a reminder of what he had lost, of what he couldn’t
forget.
Settling onto his living room couch with a cup of coffee, he turned
on the daily news. It was a ritual meant to ground him, but today it
failed. His mind wandered back to the morning’s confusion. “Who
said that?” he pondered. The process of wondering spawned billions
of scenes, characters, and themes in his mind, none of which held any
relevance. They were mere distractions from the void inside him.
He shrugged, trying to shake off the unease. “Hopefully a repeat
won’t crop up. That was tiring…” he muttered, attempting to convince
his mind to quiet down. But it was a struggle he faced every day. The

PTSD didn’t follow a schedule; it didn’t respect his need for
normalcy.
Throughout his day, the flashbacks would hit him without
warning. The sound of a car backfiring on the street would transport
him back to a war zone. The sight of a child playing with a toy gun
would make his breath hitch, his vision narrowing as if he were back
in the midst of chaos. His heart raced, his palms sweated, and for a
few seconds, he wasn’t in his hometown but in a place of terror and
confusion.
He had developed coping mechanisms over time—deep breathing,
grounding techniques, talking himself through the flashbacks.
Sometimes they worked, and other times they didn’t. But he
persevered, knowing that each day he survived was a victory.
As evening approached, he found solace in the small victories. He
had made it through another day, despite the interruptions and the
ever-present shadow of his PTSD. As he prepared for bed, he knew
the cycle would likely repeat. The nightmares, the disorienting noises,
the heart-stopping flashbacks—they were all part of his new normal.
But within him was a flicker of hope. He was learning to navigate
his mind’s treacherous landscape, finding strength in a resilience he
never knew he had. And while the journey was fraught with
challenges, he held on to the belief that one day the noise would fade,
and peace would find its way back into his life.
